John Obi Mikel says he felt he was going to lose his father after he was kidnapped by gunmen in 2018.

The 31-year-old discovered that his father had been abducted before the Super Eagles’ last group game against Argentina at the World Cup in Russia.

After lauching a search for Pa Obi, police were able to rescue him along with his driver unhurt with some of the culprits reportedly arrested.

And reflecting on the ordeal, the Middlesbrough midfielder believes the incident made his stronger.

“I thought I was going to lose my dad, I thought he was going to be shot because of the demands and stuff,” Mikel said on BBC World Service’s Sportsworld.

“They said they would shoot him and in the back of my head during the game I thought that after the match I would probably find out they had decided to shoot him.

“It’s life. It’s made me stronger as a person. I can look at so many things and say ‘this is not going to shake me because I’ve been through worse’. I just hope that it never happens again and my dad can enjoy the rest of his life in peace.”

Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho has reckoned that Liverpool can reach the Champions League final again next season.

Liverpool won the Champions League for a sixth time in their history, with a 2-0 victory over Premier League rivals Tottenham at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday night.

It was Mohamed Salah’s spot kick and Divock Origi’s last minute strike that gave the Reds their victory.

After watching Real Madrid hand over their crown after three successive titles, Mourinho predicted a third final in a row for Liverpool.

The former Chelsea boss who won the competition with Porto and Inter Milan, said on beIN Sports, “With Real Madrid it’s three in a row. Why can’t Liverpool do three finals in a row?

“Why Liverpool, with this good team, with this good spirit, with this good empathy. The club, the manager, the players, the fans. Why not a third?”

Mourinho also named seven other clubs that are capable of claiming the title.

“I was writing here the teams that want to win the Champions League. Juventus, Bayern, PSG, Manchester United, City, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid,” Mourinho added.

“You have seven or eight teams.

“Lots of teams want to do it, but only one can do it.”

However, Mourinho thinks Chelsea’s transfer ban will harm their chances of doing well in the Champions League.

“It is difficult for Chelsea because they don’t have the possibility to be in the transfer market,” Mourinho said of the Europa League champions.

Liverpool To Battle Chelsea In Super Cup On This Date

Liverpool will play Chelsea in the first all-English Uefa Super Cup on 14 August in Istanbul.

The Reds qualified by beating Tottenham 2-0 in the Champions League final, with the Blues booking their place with a 4-1 win over Arsenal in the Europa League on Wednesday.

Liverpool are the last English side to win the Super Cup, back in 2005.

Four of the past five have been all-Spanish affairs – with Atletico beating Real Madrid in Tallinn in 2018.

However there is no World Club Cup for Liverpool to play in this year, after Fifa made it a four-yearly event, with the next one in 2021. It had been played annually from 2005 until last year.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool will be in six competitions next season. They also play in the Community Shield – against Manchester City – at Wembley. A date has yet to be confirmed, but it is likely to be on 3 or 4 August.

Mohamed Salah put last season’s final heartbreak behind him by setting up a 2-0 win over Tottenham in Madrid and a sixth Champions League triumph for Liverpool.

Egypt star Salah was infamously injured in a challenge with Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos before the Reds subsided to a 3-1 defeat in Kiev 12 months ago but grabbed the opener in a largely forgettable contest at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The Premier League Golden Boot winner dispatched a second-minute penalty after Moussa Sissoko was penalised for handball.

Mourinho Claims He Knew Manchester United Would Sack Him

Jose Mourinho has played down the impact of his sack from Manchester United, saying it was “nothing I didn’t expect” and that he “didn’t need time to recover”.

The Portuguese coach was dismissed by United in December, after falling 19 points behind then-league leaders, Liverpool.

During his three-year stay at Old Trafford, Mourinho spent nearly £400million on 11 players and failed to compete for the Premier League title.

Now, Mourinho has dismissed any notion of the sacking having any lasting impact on him, insisting that he didn’t need time to recover from the job loss.

“I didn’t need to recover from anything. What happened was nothing I didn’t expect.

“I didn’t need time to recover. I’ve been using the time to work on my future, to improve my technical staff, to find a new dimension to my work, without obviously losing what I am.

“It was me who, being as I am and thinking as I think, got to where I am. But my work has been at that level. I want to be better, I want to readapt, I want to reformulate myself and that’s what I’ve been doing,” Mourinho told Eleven Sports.

JUST SHOCKING! CAF Champions League Final Abandoned After VAR Controversy

The African Champions League final was abandoned due to a row over the Video Assisted Referee (VAR) system.

Play was halted for over an hour after Wydad Casablanca refused to play when VAR was unavailable to judge a disallowed equaliser.

VAR had been set up on the side of the pitch, but the players had not been told it was not working, although officials were aware.

The referee then awarded the victory to three-time former champions Esperance.

The Tunisian side were leading 1-0 (2-1 on aggregate) in Saturday’s final, which was played over two legs. VAR had been used in last week’s first leg.

But in the second leg, Walid El Karti’s header for Wydad was disallowed for an infringement.

Wydad players protested to the Gambian referee, demanding VAR be used, and Confederation of African Football (Caf) president Ahmad Ahmad spent almost 30 minutes in discussions with officials in a bid to get the game restarted.

The 60,000 spectators inside the stadium waited for an update for 95 minutes, before the referee awarded the victory to the home team, who retained the title.
